Google’s AI mode, which has been all the rage in the last month, is upgrading just in time.
Previously, it afforded fundamental capabilities that brought accessibility and convenience to the table. However, the tech giant is adding features to align with the back-to-school year, which has begun following a busy summer.
It’s not merely about comfort and access, but about simplifying complex ideas and providing high-quality information.
The new features introduced into the AI mode will uniformly help students, parents, and teaching professionals. It has been designed with embedded versatility, whether it’s answering your questions or completing a task for you.
New features to help users kick off the upcoming school year.
1. Scan and read through PDFs and images.
Whilst users could already leverage AI mode to answer challenging questions regarding images, the feature wasn’t available on desktop browsers.
But Google realizes that most academic work and multitasking are still done on desktops.
It’s easier to navigate through multiple tabs and jump between meetings, research, and assignment writing, among others. Actions that are often unmanageable on our mobile phones.
Given this, students and educators can upload PDFs onto the AI mode and ask complex queries regarding them. It’ll read your file and cross-reference it with information available across the web. And collate helpful details along with links so you can dig deeper for further self-research.
Google plans on updating this feature in the upcoming months. Then, users can upload additional file types beyond PDF and images, and the files across their Google Drive.
2. Plan ahead of time.
It’s taxing to complete research work, write assignments, study, and create study plans for students all at once. Especially when there are numerous tasks across different subjects and days. And then another big project swoops in.

The new Canvas feature in AI mode can help here.
Canvas helps you build plans and manage information from multiple sessions in a side panel. For example, in case you wish to create a study plan for an upcoming test, you can ask the AI mode. And then tap the Create Canvas button.
The feature will start working on the plan promptly. And you can also send follow-ups to refine the timetable according to your exact expectations. No matter where you’re working from, you can catch up on the Canvas project.
Google plans on adding a new upload feature allowing users to upload their own guides. And include additional context in halfway-done projects.
3. Search what you see.
The Search in AI mode is entirely integrated with Google Lens.
It facilitates users to ask complex questions around the things you gauge on your screens, whether it’s a website, PDF, or any other content you’re viewing on the browser.
Think that you’re reading an art history research paper and need more info on a specific image for your class. You can click on the “Ask Google about this” option from the address bar and select the image you want to be informed more about.
The result? An AI overview with a small snapshot of crucial information in a side panel.
You can ask additional doubts through AI mode by choosing the option at the top of the Google Lens search results page. Or click “Dive Deeper” available at the bottom of the AI overview.
