Apple is in early talks to partner with Anthropic or OpenAI. A strategic move or an overambitious misstep?
It’s no secret that the AI race has amped up. To remain at the top of this incessant competition, tech organizations have demonstrated a certain desperation.
From rolling out newer models every other week to establishing more data centers, AI innovation has rolled out in full force. We cannot pinpoint how far we have come, with the potentialities of this modern tech remaining unknown.
And our curiosity continues to peak. In an urge to navigate the unpredictable, businesses are diverging. And Apple happens to be one of them.
A recent Bloomberg report states that Apple is in talks with Anthropic and OpenAI to amp up its AI strategy.
This step comes as a surprise.
A very unpredictable move on Apple’s part, why is it trying to power its next-gen Siri through competing models? While sidelining its in-house ones. The tech giant hopes to license customized LLMs from the two AI firms, which could actively sideline its ambitions.
The LLMs would operate on Apple’s cloud infrastructure rather than external platforms such as Azure or AWS. By running these models on their silicone-based servers, the company wishes to keep tighter control over user privacy.
The talks remain in the initial stages with no definite finalization looming in the immediate future, Bloomberg reports.
The organization’s in-house LLM is currently underway, dubbed LLM Siri, but it knows that Anthropic is way ahead. Spearheaded by Siri’s Chief, the engineering team was summoned to evaluate Apple’s own technology against that of its competitors.
The result? Anthropic’s Claude accentuated Siri’s capabilities as opposed to Apple’s technology.
As these tech powerhouses remain adamant to surpass their own abilities, Apple recognizes its limitations. It hopes to change this lag behind Anthropic and OpenAI, and instate itself as the top.
But the decision to outsource external LLM models could torpedo these efforts.
Will this prove to be a strategic or overzealous leap?
