Elon Musk sues Apple and OpenAI in a bid to challenge their unlawful partnership.
Elon Musk’s Grok has struggled to gain popularity as much as its competitor, ChatGPT. And this has hit the nail on the head of Musk’s attempts to become the next-gen AI leader.
He recently announced that xAI, his AI startup, will be funding a purely software company that can simulate Microsoft’s end-to-end operations because it’s all software-based.
Now there’s a legal lawsuit just ahead of this announcement.
Musk’s xAI has filed a lawsuit against the two tech giants, citing anticompetitive conduct as the reason. This attacks Apple and OpenAI’s strategic alliance.
Apple came into a partnership with OpenAI owing to the latter’s state-of-the-art AI capabilities and infrastructure. The device maker gained momentum in its innovation roadmap. And a significant boost by one of the leading AI companies globally.
Musk is scrutinizing this move, stating that-
“Defendants entered an unlawful agreement and conspiracy to leverage Apple’s monopoly power in the US smartphone market to maintain OpenAI’s monopoly power in generative AI chatbots.”
He claims that both businesses aim to monopolize the market for both gen AI chatbots and smartphones by joining forces. And has also made assertions that Apple has made it nearly impossible for any of the other AI companies to race ahead to the top of the list, with additional allegations that the iPhone’s developer was manipulating the rankings.
What the wealthiest man on Earth is attempting to do is gain an edge through this lawsuit- a roadblock for those ahead in the game, in time for Musk to catch up.
This remains in question.
There have been speculations that OpenAI plans to sell its shares, which would skyrocket its valuation to $500 billion. This would be another jolt for Musk. If this turns into reality, OpenAI will surpass Elon Musk’s SpaceX as the most valuable privately held company, currently valued at $350 billion.
